Fullufjället National Park

A week in the Fullufjället National Park

The Fullufjället National Park is located in central Sweden in the province of Dalarna. It’s a mountain range near the Norwegian border between the villages Sälen in the south and Särna in the north. From Germany (Karlsruhe) it takes nearly 19 hours to get there by car. The last 3-4h take forever cruising with 70-80km/h on Swedish roads. In the end it turned out to be totally worth the drive.

We parked our car at a small parking place called Göljan and packed our stuff. Afterwards we went west from the parking place along the main trail continuing for a while and finally heading south directly into the woods. After a mediocre first night camping in the middle of the forest we found a better spot for camping. Eventually we decided to move there the next day. A great spot directly at a river bank.

The nearly primeval forest does not appear to inhabit lots of animals apart from mosquitos. The animals we saw in one week are a handful of birds, a fat toad, frogs, a hornet, lots of dragon flys and a walking bird which kept me awake at night in middle of the Fullufjället 12km away from our camp.

While the others continued to further upgrade the camp i took a hike to the lake Tangsjöarna with my tent and stayed the night there. The first part of the trail leads through the dense forest with lots of moss and ferns. After the timberline the landscape changes to an open trail with rocks and tree roots whereas the last part continues through a moorish plain – a paradise for mosquitos. Around 4:30 in morning a was rewarded with an epic sunrise in complete silence. No wind, no sounds, except for the very strange very loud beeps of some birds.

After returning to the camp around 1 pm, the others presented their self-constructed sleeping places as well as a large tarp to get some shelter from the rain. This proved to be necessary the day after when it started to rain here and there for two days.
